THOUSANDS VISIT THE 2011 NAMPO
AGRICULTURAL EXPO IN BOTHAVILLE

Public holiday causes NAMPO Harvest Day to burst at its seams

Grain SA, organisers of the NAMPO Harvest Day, expected an increase of visitors on 18 May due to the municipal election that was a public holiday. A huge amount of visitors lead to Grain SA’s request by lunch time to the public who were still on their way to NAMPO Park, to rather turn back.

Mr Jannie de Villiers, Chief Executive Officer of Grain SA, requested via RSG and OFM Stereo that those still on their way should reschedule their visit, seeing that the Harvest Day continues until Friday. However, members of Grain SA could still be accommodated in their exclusive parking area.

Grain SA prepared for an increased number of visitors. The parking area was expanded and additional temporary entrances were created to accommodate the influx of visitors. Despite excellent co-operation by traffic authorities, the three available entry routes could not sufficiently handle the heavy traffic and vehicles were backed up for kilometres in both a northern and southern direction.

“NAMPO Park’s infrastructure was designed to comfortably handle a large amount of visitors, but today’s numbers were possibly the highest per day in the history of the Harvest Day. Today we had to make a choice, bearing in mind the infrastructure and every visitor already on the terrain, whilst also ensuring that potential visitors receive the full value of their entrance fee,” said De Villiers.

“Grain SA did everything within our power to address the situation, but we apologise for the inconvenience,” he continued. Pre-sold entry tickets for Wednesday will be valid for Thursday and Friday.

Despite obstacles, it was a wonderful day and visitors fully enjoyed themselves.
